Sea Freight in Colchester
If you are shipping goods abroad from Essex, or bringing a container in from overseas, the sea leg will almost certainly start or finish at Felixstowe, Tilbury or London Gateway. All three are within easy reach of Colchester. We arrange sea freight for businesses across north Essex: our freight forwarding partner books the container and handles the shipping paperwork, and our own drivers run the road leg between the port and your premises.
What container shipping costs, and why prices vary
"How much does it cost to ship a container?" is the question we hear most, and there is no single answer, because a sea freight price is built from several separate charges. Knowing what they are makes quotes much easier to compare.
The ocean freight rate
This is the shipping line's price for carrying the container from one port to another. It changes with the route, the season, the balance of trade on that route and fuel prices. Rates on the same route can move a long way within a few months.
Surcharges and port charges
Shipping lines add fuel and other surcharges, and both the UK and overseas ports charge for handling the container on and off the vessel. Some quotes include these and some list them separately.
Customs, duty and VAT
Export and import declarations have to be made at each end. Importers may also pay customs duty and import VAT, worked out from the value of the goods and their commodity code.
The road legs
The container has to get from the supplier to the port at one end and from the port to the buyer at the other. From Colchester, the UK leg is short, which is one reason north Essex is a good place to import and export from.
Delays and extras
If a container sits at the port beyond its free days, storage and container hire charges start. Inspections, rebooking after a missed cut-off and waiting time at a delivery site can also add cost.
Full container or shared space
A full container load, or FCL, gives you a whole 20ft or 40ft container for your goods alone. It is sealed at loading and usually opened only at the destination. A shared container load, or LCL, puts your pallets in a container with other shippers' cargo, and you pay for the space you take. LCL suits smaller shipments; once you are filling much of a 20ft box, a full container is often the better deal.
Not sure which box you need? Our guide to shipping container sizes and dimensions gives the inside and outside measurements of each type.
The road leg from Colchester
Exporting a full box? We drop the empty container at your unit, your staff pack it, and it goes back to the quay ahead of the ship's closing time. For imports, we collect the container once it is released and deliver it to you. Our Felixstowe container haulage page explains how port collections and empty returns work, and our container haulage in Colchester covers deliveries around Essex, including to sites without a dock.
Smaller exports going as shared cargo are picked up as loose pallets and taken to the groupage warehouse named on the booking. Being close to Felixstowe helps here too, because many of those warehouses sit around the port.
Customs paperwork
You will need an EORI number, a commercial invoice, a packing list and commodity codes for the goods. The carrier's bill of lading works as a receipt for the cargo and often as the title document that decides who can claim it at the other end. If someone else is making customs declarations for you, HMRC explains what to check before appointing them. For the wider service, see our freight forwarding in Colchester page.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to ship a 40ft container than two 20ft containers?
Usually, yes. A 40ft container holds roughly twice the volume of a 20ft but rarely costs twice as much to ship. Heavy goods are the exception, because a 20ft box can reach its weight limit before it is full.
Can I ship household goods or a car?
Our sea freight service is set up for business shipments. If you are moving personal belongings or a vehicle, tell us what it is and we will say whether we can help.
Do I need insurance?
A shipping line only pays out up to a set limit per package or per kilo, which rarely matches what the goods are worth. Most shippers buy separate cargo cover.
How long does a container take to arrive?
That depends on the route, the shipping line's service and any stops on the way. Our partner gives the planned sailing and arrival dates with the quote.
